UI Chancellor: The external situation is forcing Indonesia to transform its human resources

  • 29 Jan 2024

Jakarta (ANTARA) - Chancellor of the University of Indonesia (UI) Professor Ari Kuncoro stated that the external situation forced Indonesia to carry out a transformation in terms of human resources (HR).

Based on the 2023 Global Talent Competitiveness Index released by INSEAD (Institut Européen d'Administration des Affaires), Indonesia rose in rank from 89th to 75th position out of 113 countries for the 2023 period.

"But, if we look at what happened from 2019 to 2023, there was COVID-19, there was the problem of geopolitical tensions which caused an energy crisis. "So the external situation is forcing transformation on the HR side," he said at the 2024 Indonesian Economic Outlook National Seminar which was monitored virtually, Jakarta, Friday.

He said that the level of individual skill for his sector was increasing, but there was one interesting note, managerial ability, managerial knowledge, connecting the dots, was still missing.

For example, a culinary businessman may not have used online ordering services much before the pandemic, but only relied on customers who came in person. When the COVID-19 outbreak broke out, business people had to also serve customers online.

After the pandemic is over, it turns out that consumers are still interested in ordering food directly, while still using online food ordering services. In other words, business people need to apply the hybrid concept.

"To be sustainable, the education system must replicate the economic transformation that is taking place. "So he (a businessman) with his existing abilities, he now has to be more of a manager," said Professor Ari.

According to him, Indonesian human resources must have managerial skills and managerial knowledge considering that various sectors have shown developments in science and its relationship to the world of work and business.

For example, the term agribusiness describes not only agriculture, but also seeding, sorting, sorting, and online marketing. Likewise, the mining sector is experiencing changes after the geopolitical constellation, so there are new efforts such as recycling, recovery rates, or looking for new materials.

Apart from having to have managerial skills, Indonesian human resources must also study the supply chain starting from basic research to implementation of research.

As an example, regarding efforts to develop the energy transition from fossil fuels to sustainable fuels, we can consider costs, consumers and paradigm shifts. After that, sustainable research development can be carried out in the field of energy transition.

"If we don't (conduct research development), Indonesia will become a market again," he said.
