RI Voices Improvement In Human Resource Quality For Inclusive Economic Growth

  • 20 May 2024

Indonesia emphasizes that improving the quality of human resources (HR), both in the education and health sectors, is the basis for inclusive and equitable economic growth. This was conveyed by the Indonesian Minister of Finance Sri Mulyani Indrawati at a panel entitled "Transforming Challenge into Action: Expanding Health Coverage for All" in Washington D.C., United States.

“For countries like Indonesia that have a young demographic dividendn, such as Nigeria, this is a very important investment at an early stage. "And that is why Indonesia is placing quite large resources in both the education and health sectors," said Sri Mulyani in a statement received in Jakarta, Saturday.

In the health sector, the Minister of Finance explained that Indonesia has a law that requires the creation of access to health, even at high costs, but with a very high rate of return. This includes support for poor families to be able to obtain free health facilities.

According to the Minister of Finance, currently, the majority of Indonesia's population is registered in the health insurance system, making it the largest health insurance provider in the country. However, the main challenge faced is the lack of adequate supply to meet high demand. Therefore, he said that reform on the supply side, especially in the health sector, is very important. A large country like Indonesia faces disparities in health services across its territory, with local governments having responsibility for the health sector.

“Providing good support, technical capacity, competence, human resources, medical personnel, I think that will be very important. "Currently, Indonesia is launching comprehensive health reform, which is supported by many Multilateral Development Banks (MDBs)," said Mrs. Sri Mulyani.

To support this, said the Minister of Finance, Indonesia has passed a reform law which is very important for the Indonesian health system. This includes a complete overhaul of medical education, management of local government hospitals, basic health services, as well as integration with the insurance system.

In this way, all of these things become one important reform unit, which is not only curative but also preventive. "So, this is integrated from lifestyle to early detection of disease, to all services from primary secondary river hospitals," he added.

Finally, the Minister of Finance also emphasized that strong ownership, good leadership and a comprehensive health vision are the keys to gaining trust from funding sources, especially these MDBs.

By combining financing from various international financial institutions such as the World Bank, Islamic Development Bank and Asean Development Bank, it is hoped that a simpler and faster procurement system can be achieved.

“This will provide better results and also support reform in a credible way. "Because the law has been passed, discussions with many stakeholders have been carried out, so we will support it with funding," said the Minister of Finance.
