Financial
Services Authority, Medan, March 17, 2015: In effort to improve capacity of financial services institutions in
providing protection for consumers and society, OJK held a training on consumer
protection in financial services sector in Medan, North Sumatra, on March
17-19, 2015. The training was participated by a number of banks and companies
in insurance, financing, securities, pension fund and also collateral providers.
The event was opened by Member of Board of
Commissioners of the Financial Services Authority (OJK) for Education and
Consumer Protection Kusumaningtuti S. Soetiono. In her speech, she said that
protection for consumers and society does not only cover empowerment of
consumers and society, but also covers improvement in capacity of financial
services institutions in protecting their consumers and society by handling of
complaints and settling disputes resolution that is responsive, fast,
professional and responsible.
Medan was selected as one of the cities to
host the training, because North Sumatra ranked fifth nationally in the list of
top cities with largest consumer complaints received, with total complaint
reports amounting to 194. In the aspect of consumers and society empowerment
through financial education and introduction of financial products and
services, OJK also held another event named Regulator Educates at SMP Harapan 1
Medan junior high school.
This financial education for junior high school
students was in accordance with National Strategy on Financial Literacy in
Indonesia, which is targeting on empowering and improving financial literacy
among school students, and functioned as a continuance of a book launching for
junior high school students. The book is entitled Mengenal OJK dan Industri Jasa Keuangan (Knowing OJK and Financial Services Industry),
launched previously by OJK and Culture and Elementary and Secondary Education
Ministry on February 23, 2015 in Jakarta (read: OJK Launches Book of Financial Literacy for Junior
High School Level).
Especially
for entrepreneurs of micro, small and medium enterprises (UMKM), OJK has planned
to arrange People`s Financial Market event in third quarter of 2015 in Medan. The
event will be synergized with North Sumatra provincial government and Medan
city government so as to achieve the goal of People`s Financial Market, that is
to introduce microfinance products and services to UMKM professionals in
particular and society in general.
